"I do theater in order to further politics. I was trained to that. I was trained to – before I knew it was political theater."

Judith Malina, one of the most influential stage directors of the 20th century, was also a highly acclaimed actress and playwright. Along with her husband, Julian Beck, she founded the Living Theater in 1947. She was a committed anarchist and pacifist, and The Living Theater has reflected her social concerns. Her most noted productions include Paradise Now and The Brig. She’s received many honors, including The Ordem de Merito (Brazil), The Lola d’Annunzio Award, The New York Innovative Theater Award and several Obie Awards. She’s been inducted into the Off-Broadway Hall of Fame and The Theater Hall of Fame. Ms. Malina died in 2015.
