"The actor cannot base his performance only on the text he has to say. The actor has to be spiritually engaged."

Krystian Lupa emerged from the Polish theatre and is known for developing a method of "laboratory rehearsals", taking theatre to be a spiritual experience in extensive rehearsal periods. Some of his most lauded work has been adaptations of novels such as Bulgakov’s The Master And Margarita. He’s been awarded many honors, including Ordre des Arts et et des Lettres of the French Ministry of Culture, the Europe Theatre Prize and the Austrian Cross of Merit, as well as Polish awards such as the Witkacy Prize–Critics' Circle Award and the Gold Gloria Arts Medal.
