"Preaching to our own community, if you want to call it that, is actually very valid. It shouldn’t be looked down on, because they need us.”

Peter Schumann founded Bread and Puppet Theater in 1963 after working as a dancer and sculptor in Germany. His “Cheap Art and Political Theater” combines politics with vaudeville. The company is known for its use of large puppets and masks; its residence is in rural Vermont and it tours extensively. Among other honors, he's been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, The Herb Lockwood Prize in the Arts,  The Erasmus Award (Netherlands), The President’s Award from Puppeteers of America and an Obie Award for Lifetime Achievement.
